What Should You Do After An Accident?

There are multiple things you should do after an accident to protect yourself.

  • Stay at the scene of the accident.
  • Assess yourself for any injuries.  Many times adrenalin kicks in after an accident and you don’t feel the extent of any pain/injuries until later.
  • If possible, move your vehicle and yourself, to a safe area in order to better assess the situation and avoid further harm.
  • Contact the police immediately.
  • Obtain as much information as possible about the accident scene and all parties involved in the accident.  Get the parties full name, address, telephone number, auto insurance information, Drivers’ License, license plate number, description of the accident scene, the vehicle involved, any contributing circumstances to the accident (i.e. weather conditions, malfunctioning traffic signals, bushes or trees blocking vision of traffic signs).
  • Note if there may be any video surveillance cameras that may have captured the accident.
  • Don’t engage with combative parties to the accident.
  • Don’t admit fault.
  • If your vehicle is going to be towed, gather your personal belongings from the vehicle.
  • Contact your insurance carrier to report the accident.
  • Tell the truth.
  • Tell emergency responders about any pain/injuries you have, even if you decline emergency medical treatment.
  • Seek medical care as soon as possible for any injuries sustained in a motor vehicle accident.
  • Contact an experienced auto accident attorney immediately.
